Honky-Tonk Street--a dark, lonely, sordid edge of town--a place where Johnny Nickles and his jazz band are playing hot sets in seedy clubs and rundown bars. But a killer is stalking Johnny's band, and Johnny finds himself trapped in a deadly game of chicken with a local power broker, a corrupt sheriff, and a professional thug for hire. What's worse, the group's mysterious "Ghost Album", which memorializes and recreates classic jazz songs by long-dead masters, has become almost a curse on the band.
This is a haunting, forgotten classic of the noir crime novel. Beckman knows his music and his setting, and struts them out as masterfully as any jazzman playing a hot solo to a packed house. It doesn't get much better than this! First publication in six decades.

I enjoyed this book about the leader of a jazz group which suddenly seems stalked by a murderer. The author was a jazz musician, and he knows his jazz history. He's written an enjoyable tale about a down on his luck jazz leader whose troubles mount steadily during the course of the book before there is a satisfactory resolution at the end. However, what this has to do with the cover illustration, which would be far more appropriate for an Erskine Caldwell potboiler, is beyond me. The title is also very misleading.
Which is sad. The book is being marketed in the 'trailer trash' genre when it's really a quite nicely done tale about murder and music back in the first half of the 20th century.
I hope the book gets the attention it deserves.

HonkyTonk Girl (Audible Audio Edition) Charles Beckman Jr Sean Crisden Audible Studios Books Reviews
The 1950s were the Golden Age for pulp paperbacks, and many of those books were great. However, a lot of them were not very good. They lacked an exciting plot and/or compelling characters. Honky Tonk Girl by Charles Beckman Jr. is a very pleasant surprise. It's a gritty story of a band whose musicians are being killed off one by one. The leader is the central character and is well-drawn in three dimensions. Meanwhile, the top dog in town wants him gone and has enlisted the help of local law enforcement. A hard-as-nails story set in a surprisingly vivid bad part of town.
Nice crisp writing. This noirish thriller is a treat for fans of the genre. The jazz background adds to the atmosphere.
